The high density and compact nature of Hong Kong’s building environment always pose challenges to aging infrastructure retrofit, replacement and upgrading works of HVAC system, particularly for organizations with a remit to focus on sustainability and minimal environmental impacts. Recently, Dah Fung Hong Holdings Company Limited (Dah Fung Hong), one of the leading HVAC solutions experts proficient in HVAC system design and retrofitting, successfully completed the chiller replacement project on a slender and compact rooftop of a commercial complex in Central, overcoming all the challenges to solve the engineering problems plaguing customers for years.
Dah Fung Hong proposed 5 sets of TOSHIBA’s X-framed Universal Smart X EDGE (TOSHIBA USX EDGE) modular air-cooled chillers that well suited the client’s needs. TOSHIBA USX EDGE series is renowned for its legendary technology, best-in-class DC inverter twin rotary compressor. With optimum tuning of the compressor and adopting a highly-improved design of a heat exchanger and refrigerant cycle, the USX EDGE chillers could achieve a high efficiency Integrated Part Load Value (IPLV) of 6.4. In addition to its the compact X-framed, unique edge shape design reducing installation footprint and minimal piping space of the chiller, these features enable maintenance and serviceability for subsequent operations.

System reliability is also a major consideration of client. The modular design of the chiller can avoid risk of system shut down or sharp capacity decrease at the time of unit trouble or maintenance work. Furthermore, capacity redundancy is maximized because each chiller module has four independent refrigerant circuits. This allows back-up operations for each module unit.

Not only did Dah Fung Hong make the right equipment choice for client through their detailed chiller plant design & build proposal, but also completed the chiller replacement work with strong competency and proficiency. Their close connection and communication with TOSHIBA factory during the project implementation were absolutely a plus to facilitate the work completion while fulfilling the chiller performance expectation. After the installation work, Dah Fung Hong was also commissioned for maintenance and operations of the chiller plant, by which the WIFI LAN connectivity of the chillers was activated to enhance the service quality. A dedicated application was developed to collect data, like power consumption and inlet/outlet temperature, on tablet or mobile device, allowing for the monitoring and control of optimal operations.

With Dah Fung Hong's expertise and strategic collaboration with TOSHIBA, it ensured the successful completion of the chiller replacement project. Dah Fung Hong’s commitment to high standards in sustainability and minimal environmental impact, coupled with advanced technology and reliable system design, highlights its capability to tackle complex challenges in Hong Kong's dense urban environment. This project not only met the client's needs but also set a benchmark for future HVAC system upgrades.
